Troll 2 and the Nidaros pilgrimage

Troll 2, Trondheim, and a bit of mythology

Troll 2 — the sequel to Troll, a Norwegian movie inspired by mythology and available on Netflix — was released on the very day I was flying to Aruba for vacation. Naturally, I downloaded it, but I only managed to watch it on the return flight.

As a fan of Norse mythology and Nordic history, I genuinely liked the core idea: weaving myth and history together and offering a fictional yet creative explanation for ancient legends. That part worked for me.

What didn’t work for me was what I felt to be a deeply rooted layer of modern “woke” culture throughout the entire movie. In my humble opinion, it would have been a much better film without it. But this is Netflix — these days, it rarely sells unless it checks certain boxes… or unless it’s created by Ricky Gervais, Jimmy Carr, or Dave Chappelle.

Trondheim, myth, and history

On the positive side, I absolutely loved that this time the troll headed toward Trondheim — the first capital of Norway — on a quest to take revenge on Olaf Tryggvason for what he was forced to do by the Christian church.

I’ve been there. I’ve seen Nidaros Cathedral with my own eyes — and through the lens of my drone — and it is nothing short of incredible.

Trondheim is a city soaked in mysticism and history. The cathedral and its surrounding cemetery sit right in the city center. Nidaros is almost 1,000 years old, and legend has it that the remains of Olaf himself may still lie buried deep beneath it.

Standing there, you can genuinely feel the weight of history — and it’s easy to understand why the city fits so well into stories that blend myth, religion, and ancient conflict.

From screen to sky

If you’re interested, feel free to take a look at my drone shots of Trondheim and Nidaros. A small disclaimer, though: the cathedral shots are a bit overexposed due to the bright sun.

Interestingly enough, I noticed the same thing in the movie — washed‑out colors and overexposed frames. 😄
